Its been quite sometime since we tried or had something different from conventional lectures and discussions and exhibitions. In Techfest 2008 we present before you; the lesser known yet indefinable concept of BarCamp.

Barcamp-a word that would have most of the techenterpreneurs running around for tickets leaves the not so much geek crowd wondering, Barcamp is a un-conference defying those conventional formal corporate seminars, while at the same time satisfying the hunger of the participants. The best part about this concept is the very fact that its content is dictated by participants. It is place where you see a Many to Many discussion in full flow and with the geeky touch coming.

Everything at a barcamp is impromptu, on the spot, unplanned, that’s why they call it an “un-conference”, that’s why it is fun swapping stories and experiences.
Barcamps aren’t about intense gyan (wisdom), indepth info, comprehensive knowledge. They are more about “hey, check out this cool stuff and what it can do”. Talks aren’t planned or scheduled before a Barcamp - you go there, decide that you want to talk about something, write it on the whiteboard, pick a slot, and if people are interested in your topic, they sit in, discussions start, and so on.In terms of topics - they are literally anything. But topics tend to be technology oriented, so if you are a geek, you should feel right at home. We

So dont get surprised if you see something like a chaotic after-concert party, with t-shirts, banners, food stalls, with people on a couple of mattresses rolled out on the lawns and corridors, having animated discussions about new-fangled developments in software coding, a discourse on improvising technology in bicycles, heated arguments over gender roles and utter chaos…u gotta be in a barcamp.

And with Atul Chitnis founder of FOSS.in and Jon maddog Hall director of Linux international participating ..along with the best brains of the country the GEEKS of IIT Bombay,u cannot have a better barcamp…and that would be Techfest at its best..:)

be there to witness the bestest of best ….

P.S. - i’ll be there too, have an invite to present a paper on Cyber law :)

Cyber law, or the law dealing with cyber-space, popularly called ‘internet’ or ‘net’, is the buzz word today in law school curriculums and across the generation of old lawyers across the world. Why? Because this is more to do with technology rather than law alone. Imagine a law providing definition of ‘meta tag’, something which any computing geek can tell you. Then the law defining an ISP. Sounds hilarious and then absurd. Why should the law attempt to define these terms when they are well known and understood in the same manner across the globe? Why purpose would be served even if the law were to define the same? The slow and steady moving law can never compete with the level of technology existing at any point of time and the speed with which it grows. So what is the point of making a law, which by the time is come to govern, it is already outdated. These and other oddities of cyber law make it an interesting subject indeed.

Well, it seems there is a purpose. The purpose is ‘regulation’, something which the law exists for. The purpose is to identify the course of events, as they take place on the cyber space, and then provide a mechanism to determine rules affixing responsibilities and liabilities on the participating actors in the transactions. Take for example a simple and every day case of a cyber-café. A goes in Xena Computings and used the café for an hour. In this time, he views Z government’s site and tries to interfere with the site-coding. He is unable to change the things and so he leaves. Now should the government whose site has been fiddled with do something? Let us say that Xena Computings is situated in Z country only but A is of Y country. Can anything be done?

Well here comes the role of cyber law. It firstly defines unacceptable code of conduct on the cyber-space (something like cyber offences) and then prescribes a mechanism or procedure to deal with the situations in which this prescribed code of conduct is breached. So in this case, unless the law of Z provides against or prohibits interference with governmental websites, Z’s government will not be able to do anything, even if A had been successful in hacking the site or otherwise. Now once this is made a cyber offence, what next? The law of Z must provide a mechanism whereby Z government could affix the liability on A or Xena Computings, as the case may be, and allow the law to take its course.

So the law needs to define technical terms like hacking, cracking, ISP, subscriber, etc. and then only any action can be taken. So the premises (or the what) or cyber of law is based upon technology or for comprehensible terms, the cyber space where the why, as we have already noted, is the regulation of cyber space. Thus cyber law comes to occupy a place as a distinct and specialised branch of law.

In this series of blogs, I’ll be concentrating on scams executed completely over the internet and scams that use internet as a mode to look up probable victims. I know it’ll be too hard to believe for some that the wonderful opportunity they just came across or are already into is nothing but a scam or just the beginning of a big chain scam, trust me, most of these schemes are nothing more than a tech version of regular scams no one will fall for in real life.

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of friends falling for work from home/ earn from home scams and a majority of these friends came across such fraudulent schemes through the internet. I won’t blame my friends for falling in their trap so easy, I am a copywriter myself and the level of persuasiveness these scammers are able to bring in their advertisements amazes me….

check out these examples of scams
normally, it would take me hours of research to identify such right buttons, their attention to details is perfect.

Such Advertisements by scammers can be found all over the place: under street lights, on telephone boxes, public walls, newspapers, magazines and nowadays also on websites, blogs, forums, emails, chat rooms and all probable places where you can find people in need of a job or a few extra bucks. The reason why these schemes are able to catch the attention of so many people is simple - everyone wants to make easy money. Now, who wouldn’t want to make those few easy extra bucks from the comfort of their home at their own time or take “work from home” full time and lead a better life.

Most of these scams are executed in two steps, first they offer some info, mostly for free or at a nominal cost (to give the whole thing a professional touch) of anything around $25 (Rupees 500 in Indian scenario). Once you’ve signup/paid you are promptly provided with the promised information through email or pamphlets. In the second step you are generally asked to pay hundreds of dollars or rupees for detailed information and/or supplies and equipments. People who are able enough figure out the whole thing somewhere in between this period, while the others go on and at the end find themselves left stranded and ripped off of quite a big amount.

While some scams don’t even come to the second step, others assess your anxiety to make money and rip you with your own consent. Most of the one-step-scam scammers accept payment in online accounts via all major credit cards and these guys withdraw their money from online accounts, so once you’ve paid… you’ve lost your money. Charge-back on your credit card is the only option you are left with, which again is very complicated.

Known types of earn/ work from home scams/ frauds are:
a. Business Opportunity
b. Medical billing centers
c. Envelop stuffing
n. Water testing scams
o. Posting ads
q. Processing claims
r. Sending bulk email
s. Typing at home
If you know of any other form of scams that offer money for working from home, let me know.

I’ll explain all these types of scams and how they are executed soon, but the next blog will be on internet scams, scams that are completely executed over the internet. Until then, I’d like to leave you with one line,

The Internet in itself is a decentralised system, an uncontrolled yet organized web with no specific ends, where no one is in control of what you and I access and what not (save a few exceptional circumstances). Internet today has become the very epitome of free expression and access to knowledge. If I am not wrong, that’s what you have always heard, learnt and come to believe over the years.

However, that my friends is nothing but a myth. Yes I mean it, and in the course of this article, I’ll give you reasons to agree with me and logically conclude as to who actually controls the Internet.

For starters, here’s a brief on the evolution of the Internet.

We all know that the Internet has been invented, groomed and developed to the current state by the United States of America. It all started when …

J.C.R. Licklider of MIT, first proposed a global network of computers in 1962, and moved over to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in late 1962 to head the work to develop it. Leonard Kleinrock of MIT and later UCLA developed the theory of packet switching, which went on to form the basis of Internet connections.
The Internet, then known as ARPANET, was brought online in (more…)
